All opinions are 100% mine.</p>
<p><img height="1" src="https://lnk2.io/ykxg7Pq" style="display:none" width="1"><img height="1" src="https://lnk2.io/ykxg7Pq" style="display:none" width="1"><img height="1" src="https://lnk2.io/ykxg7Pq" style="display:none" width="1">Cricut recently released a new machine, <a href="https://cricut.com/en_us/cricut-joy-products.html?utm_campaign=cj&utm_medium=referral_influencers&utm_source=kathrynkempler.blogspot&utm_content=CricutJoy_pfp&utm_term=">Cricut Joy</a>! I love this machine because I don't have a craft room, so having a smart cutting machine that is small and portable works really well in my tiny workspace in the corner of my bedroom. No need for mats plus a smaller machine and materials makes storage really easy. I am easily able to plug in my machine, connect through bluetooth, and start making! </p>
<p>Along with the Joy, I also have a Cricut Maker machine, which has its own cool features. However, the Cricut Joy allows for unique creative possibilities. I am so excited to share a few simple projects with you and hopefully inspire you to create with Cricut Joy as well!</p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a data-blogger-escaped-style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2U34AKa6ET0/XowLUrw7XDI/AAAAAAAAB84/Scfap7p6qBsh5AWWYArxIZSB0XVDRIhRwCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_0279.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2U34AKa6ET0/XowLUrw7XDI/AAAAAAAAB84/Scfap7p6qBsh5AWWYArxIZSB0XVDRIhRwCK4BGAYYCw/s400/IMG_0279.jpg" width="300"></a></p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: center;">BABY ONESIE IRON-ON</p>
<p> </p>
<p><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-L3k71QFSaA4/Xo0Otvo-YII/AAAAAAAACAU/7yAFDRlTi3caSW_pi6_8G6CX1uOYjb8LgCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_8515.JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-L3k71QFSaA4/Xo0Otvo-YII/AAAAAAAACAU/7yAFDRlTi3caSW_pi6_8G6CX1uOYjb8LgCK4BGAYYCw/s400/IMG_8515.JPG" width="300"></a></p>
<p> </p>
<p>My first project was a Smart Iron-On project for my newborn son. I wanted to make him a cute onesie with this beautiful <a data-blogger-escaped-target="_blank" href="https://cricut.com/en_us/cricut-joy-smart-iron-ontm-patterned-natalie-malan-aquamarine.html" target="_blank">patterned Natalie Malan Aquamarine Smart Iron-On</a> I found. The only other supplies needed for this project are the <a href="https://cricut.com/en_us/cricut-joytm-blade-housing.html">blade</a> and the <a href="https://cricut.com/en_us/essentials/craft-tools/tool-sets/starter-tool-set.html">Starter Tool Set</a>. </p>
<p>I designed a simple "Baby Bee" file using a bee image and font available in the design space. I especially love this design because my husband and I are beekeepers, my son's name is Bennett (Baby "B"), and at my bee themed baby shower, we referred to him as "Baby Bee." How perfect is that?!</p>
<p> </p>
<p>You can find my "Baby Bee" file <a data-blogger-escaped-data-cke-saved-href="https://design.cricut.com/landing/project-detail/5e8c07a55e8261051c2e84e1" href="https://design.cricut.com/landing/project-detail/5e8c07a55e8261051c2e84e1">here</a>. </p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </p>
<p>Helpful tip #1: When it comes to Iron-On projects, don't forget to select "mirror" when reviewing your project (as pictured below in <a href="https://design.cricut.com/landing/project-detail/5e8c07a55e8261051c2e84e1">Design Space</a>).</p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2fGssfmH5dc/XowPTZD28wI/AAAAAAAAB-A/kzPMNpYTTn0n-ZkaRkGCxHzQrPl13ZoywCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/Screen%2BShot%2B2020-04-06%2Bat%2B10.27.19%2BPM.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="441" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2fGssfmH5dc/XowPTZD28wI/AAAAAAAAB-A/kzPMNpYTTn0n-ZkaRkGCxHzQrPl13ZoywCK4BGAYYCw/s640/Screen%2BShot%2B2020-04-06%2Bat%2B10.27.19%2BPM.png" width="640"></a></p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </p>
<p>Helpful tip #2: Remember to place the Smart Iron-On sheet face down.</p>
<p> </p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a data-blogger-escaped-style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pFjsd8zJdZw/XowOtNfKuNI/AAAAAAAAB9w/gFr0Y7KKLFUb-dQZQ-PtcKFzFbbCPwXVQCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_0312.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pFjsd8zJdZw/XowOtNfKuNI/AAAAAAAAB9w/gFr0Y7KKLFUb-dQZQ-PtcKFzFbbCPwXVQCK4BGAYYCw/s400/IMG_0312.jpg" width="300"></a></p>
<p> </p>
<p>One of the Cricut Joy machine's coolest features is that mats are optional! You simply feed the Smart Iron-On sheet directly into the machine. This makes it cheaper, faster, and simpler to create beautiful things. Check out the brand-new materials specifically for this machine that do not require a mat <a href="https://cricut.com/en_us/cricut-joy-products.html?utm_campaign=cj&utm_medium=referral_influencers&utm_source=kathrynkempler.blogspot&utm_content=CricutJoy_pfp&utm_term=">here</a>. </p>
<p> </p>
<p>Using the tools in the starter tool kit, I gently peel away the extra pieces around the cut image. </p>
<p> </p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a data-blogger-escaped-style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PnXb3UhDpaM/XowK6x0kyWI/AAAAAAAAB8s/UsMcddhfbf44A7W76j4Boq4ZmysweJfyQCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_0314.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PnXb3UhDpaM/XowK6x0kyWI/AAAAAAAAB8s/UsMcddhfbf44A7W76j4Boq4ZmysweJfyQCK4BGAYYCw/s400/IMG_0314.jpg" width="300"></a></p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Helpful tip #3: For a cleaner transfer, preheat the fabric before placing your design (as shown in the image below). Although I only have an iron, using a <a href="https://cricut.com/en_us/cricut-easypresstm-2-mint-9-x-9.html">Cricut EasyPress</a> is the ideal way to transfer an Iron-On image. </p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5SjIIeSEr9w/XowMpeRCMdI/AAAAAAAAB9E/4CCHjuQAZ8gag7DjxmLhN54UXJEQhsqFQCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_0315.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5SjIIeSEr9w/XowMpeRCMdI/AAAAAAAAB9E/4CCHjuQAZ8gag7DjxmLhN54UXJEQhsqFQCK4BGAYYCw/s400/IMG_0315.jpg" width="300"></a></p>
<p> </p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a data-blogger-escaped-style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9GYwdzDPrA0/XowKZKqG8YI/AAAAAAAAB8g/MTArB4J5rl83KaTYugpEEAckDy1XC5bsgCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_8515.JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9GYwdzDPrA0/XowKZKqG8YI/AAAAAAAAB8g/MTArB4J5rl83KaTYugpEEAckDy1XC5bsgCK4BGAYYCw/s640/IMG_8515.JPG" width="480"></a></p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Once it is pressed and has cooled completely, gently peel away the tape to reveal the finished product! </p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: center;">This project came together in only about 15 minutes. The material is so easy to load and the design space is super user-friendly. It walks you through each step of the process. </p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ey4pqEs0vwg/XowMvyhZYoI/AAAAAAAAB9U/TDvS95VaAOw9lfK81Y7F50o_eY2XsAmqwCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_0415.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ey4pqEs0vwg/XowMvyhZYoI/AAAAAAAAB9U/TDvS95VaAOw9lfK81Y7F50o_eY2XsAmqwCK4BGAYYCw/s640/IMG_0415.jpg" width="480"></a></p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: center;">JAR LABELS</p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </p>
<p><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nQ0yfR1TxkQ/Xo0amuPjYMI/AAAAAAAACAg/mmjfcdr5a3ULA21VIbLDURbyiJyaWyejgCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_0432-1.jpeg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nQ0yfR1TxkQ/Xo0amuPjYMI/AAAAAAAACAg/mmjfcdr5a3ULA21VIbLDURbyiJyaWyejgCK4BGAYYCw/s400/IMG_0432-1.jpeg" width="400"></a></p>
<p> </p>
<p>The second project I made with my Cricut Joy was a honey jar label using <a href="https://cricut.com/en_us/cricut-joy-smart-labeltm-writable-vinyl.html">Smart Label Writable Vinyl</a>. Smart vinyl comes in extended sizes, with up to 20’ repeated cut capability. That means no switching out mats, making things faster, cheaper, and simpler. </p>
<p> </p>
<p>Although we have only been hobby beekeepers for a year and a half, we hope to harvest some honey this summer! If all goes well, the bees will be thriving and there will be more than enough honey for us to take some. I've been wanting to design honey labels for a long time now, and the Smart Label Writable Vinyl inspired me to finally do so! </p>
<p> </p>
<p>I was able to create the image using a hexagon shape, an image of a hexagon pattern, an image of a bee, and font all available in the Cricut Design Space. </p>
<p> </p>
<p>You can find my honey jar label file <a href="https://design.cricut.com/landing/project-detail/5e8d09d4f1f3c3a86c15b438">here</a>. </p>
<p> </p>
<p>I used an <a href="https://cricut.com/en_us/catalog/product/view/id/6720/s/cricut-joy-infusible-inktm-markers-1-0-3-ct/">infusible ink marker</a>, which is meant to be used on a fabric base, but I loved the yellow color and tested it to make sure it wouldn't bleed or smear on the Smart Label material. The other materials needed for this project are a <a href="https://cricut.com/en_us/cricut-joy-fine-point-pens-0-4-mm-3-ct.html">fine point pen</a> in black and the Cricut Joy <a href="https://cricut.com/en_us/cricut-joytm-blade-housing.html">blade</a>. </p>
<p> </p>
<p><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Yp1mnZvEBzA/Xo0L3ghsTJI/AAAAAAAAB_Y/-JGro553dhAUxjQ3S5mf0KXYqp6_S09hwCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_0429.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Yp1mnZvEBzA/Xo0L3ghsTJI/AAAAAAAAB_Y/-JGro553dhAUxjQ3S5mf0KXYqp6_S09hwCK4BGAYYCw/s320/IMG_0429.jpg" width="240"></a></p>
<p> </p>
<p> </p>
<p>Another great feature of the Cricut Joy is that it only has one tool clamp. When you begin a project, Cricut Design Space tells you what material and tool to load in the machine. With this particular project, it began with the yellow infusible ink marker (as pictured above) and it prompted me when a tool change was required. You simply change out the tool, Press "go," and it continues the next step of the design. </p>
<p> </p>
<p>Check out the Cricut Joy-compatible pens <a href="https://cricut.com/en_us/cricut-joy-products.html?cat=369">here</a>.</p>
<p> </p>
<p><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-l3-gTMV7280/Xo0LvrnALUI/AAAAAAAAB_I/mYBpI0nuAWscjOmfRhTNQH1laIGtNUbXwCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/Screen%2BShot%2B2020-04-07%2Bat%2B3.59.48%2BPM.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="444" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-l3-gTMV7280/Xo0LvrnALUI/AAAAAAAAB_I/mYBpI0nuAWscjOmfRhTNQH1laIGtNUbXwCK4BGAYYCw/s640/Screen%2BShot%2B2020-04-07%2Bat%2B3.59.48%2BPM.png" width="640"></a></p>
<p> </p>
<p>Next, the black fine point pen is loaded. </p>
<p> </p>
<p><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WNwfIZgfUlg/Xo0L5VnmsvI/AAAAAAAAB_g/dCKbUJsQlmwhE4_T01RsWhgiuk-2ukSpQCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_0430.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WNwfIZgfUlg/Xo0L5VnmsvI/AAAAAAAAB_g/dCKbUJsQlmwhE4_T01RsWhgiuk-2ukSpQCK4BGAYYCw/s320/IMG_0430.jpg" width="240"></a></p>
<p> </p>
<p>And finally, the fine-point blade is loaded. </p>
<p> </p>

<p> </p>
<p>Smart Label Writable Vinyl is my favorite of the materials specifically for Cricut Joy. I plan to use it to label honey jars, homemade jam jars, pantry organization labels, and so much more. </p>

<p><a data-blogger-escaped-style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TlFKTKw_DPs/XowV0LLFDcI/AAAAAAAAB-c/xnsiZud91wMPb2Wkjeb2_-DDEvXphZNSwCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_0398.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TlFKTKw_DPs/XowV0LLFDcI/AAAAAAAAB-c/xnsiZud91wMPb2Wkjeb2_-DDEvXphZNSwCK4BGAYYCw/s400/IMG_0398.jpg" width="300"></a></p>
<p> </p>
<p>Another quick and easy project with the Cricut Joy is greeting cards. Cricut Design Space has tons of cute card designs and there are so many cute <a href="https://cricut.com/en_us/cutting-materials/paper/insert-cards.html">insert card sets</a> available. </p>
<p> </p>
<p>This was a project that I was able to do with the help of my three-year-old son. He has really been missing his babysitter during this social distancing time, so we decided it would be a fun activity to make a cute card to mail to her. </p>
<p> </p>
<p>The materials needed are the <a href="https://cricut.com/en_us/cricut-joy-products/cricut-joytm-card-mat-4-5-x-6-25.html">card mat</a>, insert cards (we chose the <a href="https://cricut.com/en_us/cricut-joy-products/cricut-joy-insert-cards-cream-gold-glitter.html">cream and gold insert cards</a>), and the <a href="https://cricut.com/en_us/cricut-joytm-blade-housing.html">blade</a>. </p>
<p> </p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a data-blogger-escaped-style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-w2DfhUEgVPA/XowXH8GqOxI/AAAAAAAAB-8/N9k0FtqYBBkl4BlHS8KsY18lDSlU0C5TQCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_0281.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-w2DfhUEgVPA/XowXH8GqOxI/AAAAAAAAB-8/N9k0FtqYBBkl4BlHS8KsY18lDSlU0C5TQCK4BGAYYCw/s400/IMG_0281.jpg" width="300"></a></p>
<p> </p>
<p>After much deliberation, my son decided on the <a href="https://design.cricut.com/landing/project-detail/5e150a00d9673e01f09ee7e7">Elephant Confetti Card</a>. We figured it would cheer up anyone who might be feeling down during this difficult time, and it would be so cute with the gold card insert. </p>
<p> </p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a data-blogger-escaped-style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vYu96fPZk2M/XowWMbreUnI/AAAAAAAAB-w/YE2BShcE1okBqh3ziumlqOLlYIpSZd-9QCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/Screen%2BShot%2B2020-04-06%2Bat%2B10.56.32%2BPM.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="446" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vYu96fPZk2M/XowWMbreUnI/AAAAAAAAB-w/YE2BShcE1okBqh3ziumlqOLlYIpSZd-9QCK4BGAYYCw/s640/Screen%2BShot%2B2020-04-06%2Bat%2B10.56.32%2BPM.png" width="640"></a></p>
<p> </p>
<p>The card mat is very simple to use and is exclusively for use with Cricut Joy machines.</p>
<p> </p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a data-blogger-escaped-style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OXBLQ6qf_rU/XowVwi0xEEI/AAAAAAAAB-M/cVqtfG2MOYsOOcjyBzK9mgAZWcnDOs_KwCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_0325.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OXBLQ6qf_rU/XowVwi0xEEI/AAAAAAAAB-M/cVqtfG2MOYsOOcjyBzK9mgAZWcnDOs_KwCK4BGAYYCw/s400/IMG_0325.jpg" width="300"></a></p>
<p> </p>
<p>Once the design was cut on the cream card, I removed it from the card mat and inserted the gold paper into the slots in each corner, resulting in this cheerful little card!</p>
<p> </p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a data-blogger-escaped-style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uaD8PNT4PqE/XowVyyyYmUI/AAAAAAAAB-U/R9idODfSMKIh25iUs9P_OsUUk3CaYd0aACK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_0396.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uaD8PNT4PqE/XowVyyyYmUI/AAAAAAAAB-U/R9idODfSMKIh25iUs9P_OsUUk3CaYd0aACK4BGAYYCw/s640/IMG_0396.jpg" width="480"></a></p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: center;">These projects were so much fun to make, and I especially loved being able to design the "Baby Bee" onesie and honey labels. Cricut Joy is the perfect compact smart cutting machine. In my opinion, the exclusive Cricut Joy materials is what sets this machine apart.</p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: center;">My favorite things about Cricut Joy from doing these projects:</p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: center;">- projects can easily come together in a matter of minutes</p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: center;">- the machine is easy to store and quick to set up</p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: center;">- the new Cricut Joy materials that don't require a mat are so easy to use (and are so cute!)</p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: center;">- the card mat makes card making so easy</p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: center;">- the Cricut Joy projects available in Cricut Design Space are so cute and inspiring</p>
<p data-blogger-escaped-style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </p>

My most recent make is a simple, fitted knit dress, perfect for spring time! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As I mentioned in this <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/BwH3EspHOst/" target="_blank">Instagram post</a>, I love having the ability to make clothes custom fit to my body and my style. This dress is a comfortable length (not too short for chasing a toddler around) and its fitted but not too tight. This thick <a href="https://www.joann.com/solid-refined-ponte-knit-fabric--bright-white/15334287.html#q=ponte%2Bknit&start=1" target="_blank">ponte knit fabric</a> from Joann is very forgiving, also not at all see through! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SIwQ5GtoXPk/XK_MsBQk0JI/AAAAAAAABxY/pMFIZNCADAkBuYQbUD0nz8JQRISSQO4CgCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_7802.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SIwQ5GtoXPk/XK_MsBQk0JI/AAAAAAAABxY/pMFIZNCADAkBuYQbUD0nz8JQRISSQO4CgCK4BGAYYCw/s640/IMG_7802.jpeg" width="456" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
One night I was itching to sew something, but I had no project in mind. I started digging through my stash, hoping to use up something that I already have, and I stumbled across this white ponte knit from Joann. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I knew right away that I wanted to make another knit dress (my <a href="http://kathrynkempler.blogspot.com/2018/05/tiered-ruffle-sleeves.html" target="_blank">last one</a> gets worn all the time!), however I didn't want it to be stark white. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Luckily I've been saving onion skins and avocado pits to naturally dye fabric, so I pulled my red onion skin stash from the freezer! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Z1UB9b7D9KI/XK_M2SpdUGI/AAAAAAAAByA/gDtmSfn-xIE2_PhcVSDwg-vOUnjh8jA1gCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_7673.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Z1UB9b7D9KI/XK_M2SpdUGI/AAAAAAAAByA/gDtmSfn-xIE2_PhcVSDwg-vOUnjh8jA1gCK4BGAYYCw/s400/IMG_7673.jpeg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I boiled the onion skins in a big pot of water for over an hour. I then got the fabric wet with hot water and put it in the dye bath (I used my sink since my pot was not big enough for that much fabric). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-M3Pw0LAw7j4/XK_M1gLv1DI/AAAAAAAABx4/j1q3roM4ekMw_6GsgG-Jo1ru3x_eq9rnQCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_7677.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-M3Pw0LAw7j4/XK_M1gLv1DI/AAAAAAAABx4/j1q3roM4ekMw_6GsgG-Jo1ru3x_eq9rnQCK4BGAYYCw/s400/IMG_7677.jpeg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The fabric soaked overnight and the result was this beautiful blush shade! It was just what I wanted, something light and breezy other than stark white. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Such a beautiful subtle pink color!</td></tr>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I am so inspired by the beautiful colors that Sara from <a href="https://www.farmandfolk.com/" target="_blank">Farm & Folk</a> achieves from natural dyes and the beautiful quilts that she makes. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I plan on doing a lot more research and learning all I can about natural dyes.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I got started right away with turning it into a dress! I used the same self drafted pattern I used for my <a href="http://kathrynkempler.blogspot.com/2018/05/tiered-ruffle-sleeves.html" target="_blank">last dress</a>, serged it all together, and used a double needle for the hems. It all came together (cut out and sewn) in less than two hours! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-n7sxcfWX1Tg/XK_MwtURPTI/AAAAAAAABxo/5NYR1MnONZIRsrGjfAChPW8l5kIrl9rGACK4BGAYYCw/s1600/3C446F87-6C1A-4626-815F-CE8B98ACEA50.JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-n7sxcfWX1Tg/XK_MwtURPTI/AAAAAAAABxo/5NYR1MnONZIRsrGjfAChPW8l5kIrl9rGACK4BGAYYCw/s320/3C446F87-6C1A-4626-815F-CE8B98ACEA50.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I am so happy with how it turned out! It will be a staple in my spring/summer wardrobe, and I might need to make a few more. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For my body type, I have to lengthen dresses to avoid them being too short, and I often have to drop the waist (my torso is very long). I love the freedom that comes with sewing my own clothes. I get to make whatever works best for me and as a result I have a closet full of clothes I feel so great in!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

Favorite and most worn make as of late: the Five Points Blouse. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.sewnews.com/articles/Five-Points-Blouse?bc=c" target="_blank">This pattern</a> is from the Feb/March issue of <a href="http://sewnews.com/" target="_blank">Sew News</a> and is free through March! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It was designed by the talented Jennifer from <a href="http://jennifersewsagain.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Peppermint Creek</a>. </div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/--UtVqt2WPdk/XIh3OOtUsnI/AAAAAAAABv0/MuENZyexoM41kowc_-vaiO08HE0pTdFwwCLcBGAs/s1600/B4D3AC6A-95EB-4FE1-9D42-092DDB70EBDA-1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/--UtVqt2WPdk/XIh3OOtUsnI/AAAAAAAABv0/MuENZyexoM41kowc_-vaiO08HE0pTdFwwCLcBGAs/s640/B4D3AC6A-95EB-4FE1-9D42-092DDB70EBDA-1.JPG" width="640" /></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I love the shoulder and cuff detail. Instead of using a contrasting color for the shoulder yolk piece, I used the wrong side of my fabric. It created a subtle contrast against the crepe texture of the rest of the bodice.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The front zipper is a fun detail. The pattern comes with the option to have no zipper as well. I used a metal zipper with gold teeth and black tape. I love how it adds a little more visual interest to simple fabric, just like the contrasting yolk and cuff.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ce8Y9Sc7SGM/XIh3j75ScmI/AAAAAAAABv8/1kcC8wayZkIBl_nv0_mWeHjPR2yBxP3CQCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_7296-1.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ce8Y9Sc7SGM/XIh3j75ScmI/AAAAAAAABv8/1kcC8wayZkIBl_nv0_mWeHjPR2yBxP3CQCEwYBhgL/s640/IMG_7296-1.jpeg" width="480" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Yolk and cuff details</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The only modification I made was raising the neckline at the front bodice shoulder seam. I should have made the adjustment to the pattern at the beginning, but I didn't know I needed it until the garment was almost finished. I didn't want to take anything from the yolk piece or the cuff, so I took an inch and a half from the neck edge and tapered to nothing at the sleeve cuff. It is much more comfortable for me to have the neckline higher. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The magazine gives a useful tip to be careful about the weight of your zipper. My zipper was probably too heavy, which caused my gaping neckline issue. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The hem is a high-low, which is my favorite shape on my body. I have a very long torso, so I do everything I can to make my legs look longer, like high waisted jeans and tucking in my shirts in the front. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RlsdJym6Xts/XIh6g_kCPGI/AAAAAAAABwQ/5ahVRVUMn2Ap5Vkww-vdjg0dFjezGzKvgCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_1348-1.jpeg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RlsdJym6Xts/XIh6g_kCPGI/AAAAAAAABwQ/5ahVRVUMn2Ap5Vkww-vdjg0dFjezGzKvgCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_1348-1.jpeg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For date night, I wore the Five Points Blouse with the <a href="https://alinadesignco.com/product/fulton-sweater-blazer/" target="_blank">Fulton Sweater Blazer</a> by <a href="https://alinadesignco.com/" target="_blank">Alina Design Co.</a>, another one of my favorite me-made pieces.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KUOJxihOVMw/XIh6Z90zUHI/AAAAAAAABwM/xNwE3GA8o0woARLQHUOOjrygj7KeT-7NACEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_1352.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KUOJxihOVMw/XIh6Z90zUHI/AAAAAAAABwM/xNwE3GA8o0woARLQHUOOjrygj7KeT-7NACEwYBhgL/s640/IMG_1352.jpeg" width="480" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Zipper and notched collar details</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I love the silhouette of this top and I am so happy with the outcome. For my next one, I will probably size up because it is meant to have a looser fit.</div>

As I sew, I toss my thread clippings and scraps of fabric in a bag. Every few months I take my bags of scraps to H&M because they recycle textiles. It feels like such a waste to throw it all away.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Recently, <a href="https://closetcasepatterns.com/" target="_blank">Closet Case Patterns</a> released a <a href="https://closetcasepatterns.com/fabric-floor-pouf-free-sewing-pattern/" target="_blank">floor pouf pattern</a> that is the ultimate scrap buster! The pieces are cut from various fabrics and it is then stuffed with scraps!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I got cutting! I cut up so much of my larger scrap pieces and then I started to gravitate towards some fabric in my stash.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

My stash of fabric isn't very big, but a large portion of it is colorful fabric that I had no plans for. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My mom travels a lot and often brings home a yard of fabric for me, my brother, and my sister (we all sew!).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I thought it would be so fun to make a pouf for her with some of the fabric she has brought back from other countries.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Happy New Year!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In 2018, I was more motivated and inspired than ever to create! I made 30 items for myself and 15 for others. I see no end in sight, so I am hopeful that 2019 will be another great, productive year!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have three major goals this year in regards to sewing:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
MORE PATTERN MAKING</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I love pattern making! Up until May of this year, I made all of my patterns and loved it! Its so fun being able to come up with an idea, design it, and make the pattern. It is challenging and so satisfying. In May, I made so many items (inspired by <a href="http://kathrynkempler.blogspot.com/2018/06/me-made-may-2018.html" target="_blank">Me Made May</a>) and became consumed in the construction side of things rather than the design side. I want to start pattern making again so that I can exercise my own creativity. I don't want to lose the skills I have obtained.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0eBMMLBxiYs/XC06TfhaSAI/AAAAAAAABps/hzA0iNkKcKcmcwFxz-YGu8N7uQPZLnTJQCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_6938.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0eBMMLBxiYs/XC06TfhaSAI/AAAAAAAABps/hzA0iNkKcKcmcwFxz-YGu8N7uQPZLnTJQCK4BGAYYCw/s320/IMG_6938.jpeg" width="257" /></a></td></tr>

</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
MORE REFASHIONS</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have so many clothes in my closet that never get worn. Either they don't fit well, need a modification, or I feel to guilty to donate them. I want to go through my closet this year and make those items work for me (or for someone else!). </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">A thrifted dress I've never worn turned into a <a href="https://shop.truebias.com/product/ogden-cami" target="_blank">True Bias Ogden Cami</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
NO BUYING CLOTHES</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I participated in a Ready to Wear Fast for 2018. My mother-in-law told me she was doing it so I jumped on board too! At times it was challenging, but overall, I don't have the desire to purchase any clothes. I love being able to make clothes that fit and that I love. This year I want to challenge myself by making anything I might need (I'm due for some jeans and a bra).</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

A few months ago we bought some new things for my son's room. His crib and dresser are light wood and his crib sheet is mint green with a white blanket. I loved everything together, but I needed to add a bit more color. I loved the idea of adding navy and a mustard or orange color.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rZjs-LDjb0c/XAX1Vv82YLI/AAAAAAAABnI/BC9ku6M-weos9X6RpLd0Byyrly9ppC9KQCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_6226.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rZjs-LDjb0c/XAX1Vv82YLI/AAAAAAAABnI/BC9ku6M-weos9X6RpLd0Byyrly9ppC9KQCK4BGAYYCw/s640/IMG_6226.jpeg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I found the perfect grey, blue, and navy fabric at <a href="https://www.superbuzzy.com/" target="_blank">Super Buzzy</a> in Ventura. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-W1rYAi6cUPE/XAX1ON0oDjI/AAAAAAAABmk/jwxO3s8gVqILGwmDDJZzp5eiJIqlXfjBgCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_6090.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-W1rYAi6cUPE/XAX1ON0oDjI/AAAAAAAABmk/jwxO3s8gVqILGwmDDJZzp5eiJIqlXfjBgCK4BGAYYCw/s400/IMG_6090.jpeg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I calculated how much fabric I had and how big I could make the quilt. If I did 4 inch squares (5" including the seam allowance), I could make a 45"x55" quilt, roughly the size of a crib quilt. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I had just enough of each color to make this happen. I had a half yard of the grey and navy fabrics and one yard of the blue. Here is the gingham pattern all laid out:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-toYvbF7YAdw/XAX2OpWN0AI/AAAAAAAABn8/jpblVrCD0X8oL2aRqnV--7fZQl__1bz-QCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_6093.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-toYvbF7YAdw/XAX2OpWN0AI/AAAAAAAABn8/jpblVrCD0X8oL2aRqnV--7fZQl__1bz-QCK4BGAYYCw/s400/IMG_6093.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Fabric all cut!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Once I had the gingham pattern sewn together, I started my search for the perfect fabric for the backing. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7a7ECujd6Ps/XAX2TslqWeI/AAAAAAAABoE/sKveev___Y47sT0nmJd_WL86zRvN54A0wCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_6097.jpeg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7a7ECujd6Ps/XAX2TslqWeI/AAAAAAAABoE/sKveev___Y47sT0nmJd_WL86zRvN54A0wCK4BGAYYCw/s400/IMG_6097.jpeg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I found the most perfect fabric at <a href="https://www.joann.com/" target="_blank">Joann</a>. I fell in love with it right away. Its a white cotton with navy, blue, and mustard X's. The pattern is so simple and delicate, just what I had hoped for. It also made the decision easy for me: the binding had to be mustard!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">My little helper!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The most time consuming part was stitching the straight lines on each side of each seam. It took a long time, but it was worth it. No other quilting technique would have don't this quilt justice. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I found the matching shade of mustard quilting cotton from <a href="http://www.quiltypleasuressimivalley.com/" target="_blank">Quilty Pleasures</a>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OLGBlfqCzMs/XAX1X2O7RMI/AAAAAAAABnU/A6gjE3fexhYoAg5FV2WNQruD1SsOheTCACK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_6239.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="370" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OLGBlfqCzMs/XAX1X2O7RMI/AAAAAAAABnU/A6gjE3fexhYoAg5FV2WNQruD1SsOheTCACK4BGAYYCw/s400/IMG_6239.JPG" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The "X" fabric perfectly matches the mustard binding and the blues. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
All finished! Just in time for the weather to get a little chilly! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The best thing about quilts is that they get softer and softer with each wash. I've loved to watch my son grow attached to his new quilt. Every once in a while, he will drag it around the house with him after he wakes up from a nap and it makes my heart melt. </div>

I was debating between a few different patterns for a while. I wanted to make some cropped high waisted wide leg pants and I knew I wanted them in a cream/natural denim. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I decided on the Persephone Pants by <a href="http://annaallenclothing.com/" target="_blank">Anna Allen Clothing</a> because they are so similar to the coveted Kamm Sailor pants:</div>

There are a lot of details about the Persephone Pants that I loved, such as the hidden button placket, the practically invisible front pockets, and no side seams.<br />
<br />
The instructions were very easy to follow and it all came together very smoothly. I was lucky, in that I didn't need to make any fit adjustments to the waist or hips. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I went to the LA fabric district and found the perfect denim in a few different stores. My deciding factor was the price. I was able to get enough fabric for pants and shorts (3 or 4 yards, I can't remember) for $12. The cost of the pattern was $14, so total, I made a $13 pair of pants and a $13 pair of shorts. Not bad at all!<br />
I get asked frequently if it is cost effective to make my own clothes. This is an example of how it can be very cost effective. I am lucky to be close to a major fabric district and, the more I sew, the more my skills develop! </div>

I recently scored a pretty white shower curtain from a thrift store. I have saved some avocado pits recently and I knew I wanted to dip dye the shower curtain! I fell in love with dip dying <a href="http://kathrynkempler.blogspot.com/2017/10/indigo-dying.html" target="_blank">last year</a> when I transformed some dish towels and burp cloths.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
I referenced <a href="http://livefreecreative.co/2017/06/dye-avocado-pits/" target="_blank">this blog post</a> as I was researching the best way to dye with avocado pits. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
First, I submerged the pits in water in my largest pot (I wish I had a bigger one) and brought it to a boil. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-EJbEqaGAsjU/W3zQ5gylA9I/AAAAAAAABjE/mnhIkDj60Ls4GOkw-2u6HRPmeLi83QyfgCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_5861.jpeg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-EJbEqaGAsjU/W3zQ5gylA9I/AAAAAAAABjE/mnhIkDj60Ls4GOkw-2u6HRPmeLi83QyfgCK4BGAYYCw/s400/IMG_5861.jpeg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I then let it simmer for an hour. The pink color became apparent rather quickly and got darker and darker as it simmered. Then I let the dye sit overnight. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8RHTeNsakkQ/W3zRuce62pI/AAAAAAAABjQ/lyCv_dyhEQA8bPq-4t3LXECDzFV0B_AtACK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_5866.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8RHTeNsakkQ/W3zRuce62pI/AAAAAAAABjQ/lyCv_dyhEQA8bPq-4t3LXECDzFV0B_AtACK4BGAYYCw/s400/IMG_5866.jpeg" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Ready to go! Notice the dark pink color of the water</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In the morning, I scooped the pits out of the water and brought the water back to a boil. I then got the bottom portion of the shower curtain (the portion I wanted to dye) wet. I then turned off the heat on the dye bath, submerged the wetted portion, and secured the rest of the curtain out of the way. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-S5zpLAAxrrk/W3zST8oF7-I/AAAAAAAABjc/vuMFsnl30IMv7x8IgrhfqyPEOAbrj9sWQCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_5869.jpeg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-S5zpLAAxrrk/W3zST8oF7-I/AAAAAAAABjc/vuMFsnl30IMv7x8IgrhfqyPEOAbrj9sWQCK4BGAYYCw/s320/IMG_5869.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I frequently moved the curtain around so that it would stay submerged. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I left it soaking for about two hours.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_ov962DJ0vs/W3zT3iJaEJI/AAAAAAAABjo/zV79g_3ovGgnvLQ8wAYSuRG_WVOktTenACK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_5926.JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_ov962DJ0vs/W3zT3iJaEJI/AAAAAAAABjo/zV79g_3ovGgnvLQ8wAYSuRG_WVOktTenACK4BGAYYCw/s400/IMG_5926.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I wish I had left it soaking longer! I think my dye bath had the potential to produce a beautiful, dark color because I had so many pits. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I will definitely be doing this again! Just need a bigger pot... Such a cool experiment. I would also love to dye with yellow onion skins and tea. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

I had the chance to test a new pattern by <a href="https://www.lovenotions.com/" target="_blank">Love Notions</a> and had a blast!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I've always wanted to test a new pattern because I am a pattern maker and I know the process and I've always wanted to be part of the process in fine tuning a new pattern. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GZslE5DVnB8/WzEe5YN4ODI/AAAAAAAABhQ/iFnGrn3RJvkk2T3lBjg_WLWA1IzVYfTFwCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_5328.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hQ4G_YahtRI/WzEgGqA_CBI/AAAAAAAABhw/tjPa7vR3ssQACoVFlqdgSetd-ZywVcZtwCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_5365.jpeg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hQ4G_YahtRI/WzEgGqA_CBI/AAAAAAAABhw/tjPa7vR3ssQACoVFlqdgSetd-ZywVcZtwCK4BGAYYCw/s640/IMG_5365.jpeg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This <a href="https://www.lovenotions.com/product/easy-classic-tee-pattern" target="_blank">Classic Tee Pattern</a> is the perfect basic tee pattern. It has three sleeve length options (short, 3/4 length, and long) and three neckline options (crew, scoop, or v-neck). I chose to do a short sleeve scoop neck version. I am going to make the v-neck version next!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GZslE5DVnB8/WzEe5YN4ODI/AAAAAAAABhQ/iFnGrn3RJvkk2T3lBjg_WLWA1IzVYfTFwCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_5328.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GZslE5DVnB8/WzEe5YN4ODI/AAAAAAAABhQ/iFnGrn3RJvkk2T3lBjg_WLWA1IzVYfTFwCK4BGAYYCw/s320/IMG_5328.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The bodice is a relaxed fit that works perfectly with this <a href="https://www.joann.com/rayon-spandex-knit/zprd_10094837a.html" target="_blank">cream rayon/spandex blend</a> fabric I chose from Joann Fabrics. I've never used rayon/spandex fabric before, but I loved it! It is so soft and a little more heavy than other knits and I love the way it drapes. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This top was so easy and fast to put together and only requires a yard of fabric!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-aM7VDqT_Wys/WzEe0V7FD3I/AAAAAAAABg4/RdOd3Kl8Tbwxwy1gl69Od0bqXDRiyJ7EACK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_5370.jpeg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-aM7VDqT_Wys/WzEe0V7FD3I/AAAAAAAABg4/RdOd3Kl8Tbwxwy1gl69Od0bqXDRiyJ7EACK4BGAYYCw/s400/IMG_5370.jpeg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I chose not to lengthen the pattern even though I should have. I prefer shorter shirts, so I love the length of this!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

I was then walked through all the preparatory steps. First, I inserted the washable fabric pen and the rotary blade into the adaptive tool system. </div>

Then, I place my fabric of choice (a mystery cotton/polyester fabric) onto the FabricGrip mat. To make this easy, I cut my fabric into 12x24 pieces so they fit perfectly on the mat. </div>

Both the bonnet and romper called for a few feet of double fold bias tape. It was used as elastic casing and to finish off a raw seam. This was really easy to make. With my manual rotary cutter, I cut long strips of fabric 1.25" wide on the bias. I then pressed the double fold and had perfect, matching bias tape for my project.</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Elastic casing sewn in</td></tr>

The last part of the assembly is the closures. The instructions call for velcro, but I chose to use buttons and button holes instead!<br />
I recently learned how to sew buttons on with my machine, so I love sewing them on as often as I can. Plus, I think the yellow buttons add a special something to the romper.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-G-B1GJvcLsI/Wyh6wf1qDkI/AAAAAAAABc0/PF1MkvR9SR83JvuTsGUshsDCAqWiUe8RACK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_5318.jpeg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-G-B1GJvcLsI/Wyh6wf1qDkI/AAAAAAAABc0/PF1MkvR9SR83JvuTsGUshsDCAqWiUe8RACK4BGAYYCw/s640/IMG_5318.jpeg" width="466" /></a><br />
<br />
When I am cutting a project by hand, I always forget to transfer pattern markings, which slows me down and requires me to refer back to the pattern multiple times. With the Cricut Maker, I don't even have to think about it anymore. The washable fabric pen came out with a little bit of water once it was all finished. Plus, the pattern pieces were perfectly cut, so sewing everything together was easy and resulted in the most perfect little outfit.<br />
<br class="Apple-interchange-newline" />
I am so in love with this romper and bonnet set! This might be my go-to baby shower gift from now on. This particular one, however, is going in my "too-cute-to-give-away" box!</div>

My love for creating certainly doesn't end with clothing. I also love home decor DIY projects. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When I was introduced to the <a href="https://shop.cricut.com/en_us/cricut-maker-machine.html" target="_blank">Cricut Maker</a>, I was blown away by how versatile it is! Not only does it make so many paper and vinyl projects, it has applications to make everything from quilts to leather clutches. It even cuts balsa wood! It's amazing all the things this machine can do. It is the perfect "toy" for a creator, and, along with my sewing machine, I can make virtually anything!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The Cricut Makers has an adaptive tool system, which means you can switch out the type of blade and/or marker depending on what materials a project calls for. </div>

When you select a project, the Design Space gives you step by step instructions on how to load your materials into the machine, what mat to put your materials on, and what blade to use. This project calls for the 12x12 strong grip cutting mat and the deep cut blade.<br />
Once the project is cut (so fun to watch!), it then gives you steps on how to assemble the cut project. The tassel keychain only needed a key ring and a hot glue gun.<br />

The library of sewing projects includes patterns from Simplicity and Riley Blake. It makes sewing patterns super simple because it cuts and marks the fabric for you. The <a href="https://shop.cricut.com/en_us/cricut-sewing-kit.html" target="_blank">sewing kit</a> has all the essentials for sewing projects. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I was nervous to use this machine when it first arrived. I was a bit intimidated. However, as soon as I started to explore, I learned how user-friendly the Cricut Maker and Design Space are. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The Cricut Maker comes with all the basic tools to get started. it even comes with the materials needed for your first project.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have so many plans for my Cricut Maker. A few projects I can't wait to get started on are vinyl canister labels for my pantry, a leather clutch, greeting cards, a stuffed dog, and all the baby clothes!</div>

I've been wanting to attempt a self-drafted dropped shoulder pattern for a while. I loved <a href="https://rachelparcell.com/collections/tops/products/megan-tee-in-white" target="_blank">this top</a> and wanted to do something similar by incorporating a ruffle. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The pattern came together pretty easily and I was confident I would be happy with the outcome. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

To get the perfect ruffle, I cut a strip that was half the width of the under sleeve, and 1.5 times the length. When I'm creating something with ruffles, I always choose to use a 1:1.5 ratio. It is the perfect fullness in my opinion. </div>

I survived my first Me Made May! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I thought it would be a breeze because 99% of what I make is for myself. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I quickly realized, however, that I only had about 15 items that would work. Some of my me-made items only work in the fall and winter due to material or color. I was much more limited than I thought, so first thing I did the night before May 1st was make a new top. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here are the photos I got each day of my me-made items, from the 1st to the 31st: </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I had a lot of repeats, and five of the items were made during the month of May. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My goal for the month was to wear one me-made item each day.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Im really glad I followed through with it because it pushed me to get creative some days and it motivated me to make more.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I've come away from this experience with a new goal (one I've never considered before): I want to have a 100% handmade wardrobe someday soon.</div>

I have recently started posting pictures of my makes on <a href="https://www.instagram.com/kathryns_avenue/" target="_blank">instagram</a>. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I posted about this pillowcase a few weeks ago.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We recently moved and as we have been getting settled, I've been in the mood for a change. I have had the same white and grey pillows (which I love!) in our living room for three years, but I wanted to bring in some more color. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I searched through my fabric stash and came across this green printed fabric that my mom got me as a souvenir in India. (Searching for fabric as a souvenir when traveling?! Genius!) It is such a pretty color and definitely adds more interest to the room. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-og5sEiOR0FQ/WvN7Mpznv9I/AAAAAAAABWs/AHaonaDH2Bw3-8tcqWgn_5o2yAOJR2HZgCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_4546.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-og5sEiOR0FQ/WvN7Mpznv9I/AAAAAAAABWs/AHaonaDH2Bw3-8tcqWgn_5o2yAOJR2HZgCK4BGAYYCw/s400/IMG_4546.jpeg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This pillowcase was so easy to make. I measured the square pillow and cut out a piece of fabric that size, adding extra for seam allowance. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For the back, I created an envelope opening (so easy). I cut two pieces for the back that overlapped a few inches at the closure. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I have recently been introduced to the world of pdf patterns. This is the first pdf pattern I've used, and it was a success! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I came across it in my search for a free pattern to try out. <a href="http://www.deer-and-doe.com/" target="_blank">Deer & Doe</a> has beautiful patterns and their <a href="https://shop.deer-and-doe.fr/en/sewing-patterns/20-plantain-t-shirt-pattern.html" target="_blank">plantain tee</a> pattern is free! They have a few dress patterns I'm excited to try. </div>

<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My last trip to the fabric district began, of course, with a stop at Michael Levine Loft! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My sister-in-law <a href="https://littlefishapparel.com/" target="_blank">Rachel</a> and I both left with a matching white and orange striped knit. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I knew right away that I wanted to make a comfortable summer dress. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The next morning, my son took a long nap and I was able to start and finish the dress in one sitting!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The pattern was simple. I grabbed a shirt and a pencil skirt from my closet that fit me well and I laid them out on the fabric and cut around them, adding some room for seam allowance. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I did the same thing for the sleeve. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4VSuSMKv_x4/WvN6qSipOKI/AAAAAAAABWE/QQRgew3eo8oEy9J-h-8hqnPqTZqU8oCWQCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_4572.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4VSuSMKv_x4/WvN6qSipOKI/AAAAAAAABWE/QQRgew3eo8oEy9J-h-8hqnPqTZqU8oCWQCK4BGAYYCw/s320/IMG_4572.JPG" width="292" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I was inspired by <a href="https://rachelparcell.com/collections/everyday-shop-tops-sweaters/products/just-peachy-top" target="_blank">this top</a>, so I measured the circumference of the sleeve hem and I cut two strips of fabric that were one and a half times longer than the circumference, one strip wider than the other. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ENh_rffbyEI/WvN6pwY8pcI/AAAAAAAABV8/Bvn5oEL5IV43OVMyzs2K6PakjBaPOpOxgCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_4573.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ENh_rffbyEI/WvN6pwY8pcI/AAAAAAAABV8/Bvn5oEL5IV43OVMyzs2K6PakjBaPOpOxgCK4BGAYYCw/s400/IMG_4573.jpeg" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Trying it on to check the fit! </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I used a double needle for all of the hems and it created such a clean finish! </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Q06hehMECXA/WvN66OVamUI/AAAAAAAABWc/A4EKFFMSb_AE9AGP2C7ePttvaADfMnppACK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_4697%2B2.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Q06hehMECXA/WvN66OVamUI/AAAAAAAABWc/A4EKFFMSb_AE9AGP2C7ePttvaADfMnppACK4BGAYYCw/s640/IMG_4697%2B2.jpeg" width="363" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I wore this dress multiple times that first week! It is my favorite me-made item so far, but I've said that about each item I make... </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I am really loving the sleeve detail! I will probably be adding the same tiered ruffle to more things I make this summer. </div>

A couple of years ago I made my sister in law a <a href="http://kathrynkempler.blogspot.com/2016/05/pleated-skirt.html" target="_blank">pleated skirt</a> for Christmas. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It was inspired by <a href="http://kathrynkempler.blogspot.com/2016/05/pleated-skirt.html" target="_blank">this skirt</a>. I love it because it is such a classic style and a simple to make. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4HkBOy6PFxM/WjbcQDqXKOI/AAAAAAAABKw/RdFlELEJCV8x5BuTorz99NGt0bhrI4i1ACK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_3737.jpeg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4HkBOy6PFxM/WjbcQDqXKOI/AAAAAAAABKw/RdFlELEJCV8x5BuTorz99NGt0bhrI4i1ACK4BGAYYCw/s400/IMG_3737.jpeg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
On my <a href="http://kathrynkempler.blogspot.com/2017/12/la-fabric-district.html" target="_blank">last trip</a> to the LA Fabric District, I found a heavy ribbed knit in white that I knew right away would have to be used for a pleated skirt. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
All I had to do was measure my waist and create these even box pleats. I chose to make pleats that were 3 inches wide because I wanted them to be even, including the zipper addition, and my waist measurement was easy to divide by 3.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cFw_sU4u22Y/Wp9rbm4tCrI/AAAAAAAABQ0/0IarUbsFemQgHOaFcTgg_nn9hDzJZTKzwCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_3907.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cFw_sU4u22Y/Wp9rbm4tCrI/AAAAAAAABQ0/0IarUbsFemQgHOaFcTgg_nn9hDzJZTKzwCK4BGAYYCw/s320/IMG_3907.jpg" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The first row of stitching to secure the pleats in just the right places</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I stitched across the skirt at the waistline once the pleats were all pinned in place. After that I stitched again next to the first stitch to ensure the pleats were perfect and secure. After that, I attached the waistband to the front of the skirt. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7Bm7nrim5qY/Wp9rZQjOkBI/AAAAAAAABQk/9wQJ52ULtMka015bUuDYWEPizNChbcSfgCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_3911.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7Bm7nrim5qY/Wp9rZQjOkBI/AAAAAAAABQk/9wQJ52ULtMka015bUuDYWEPizNChbcSfgCK4BGAYYCw/s320/IMG_3911.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I took advantage of the stretch in the fabric when making the waistband. I often make waistbands that are too big, and I didn't want that to happen again, so I made sure to measure the waistband with the perfect amount of stretch. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bGdXBb5OMl4/Wp9rZ0mhp2I/AAAAAAAABQs/9Z9K2qQdu8wVv7Idcgm-9OTMOYvzAAfmQCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_3975.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bGdXBb5OMl4/Wp9rZ0mhp2I/AAAAAAAABQs/9Z9K2qQdu8wVv7Idcgm-9OTMOYvzAAfmQCK4BGAYYCw/s320/IMG_3975.JPG" width="180" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After attaching the zipper, I stitched in the ditch to secure the inside of the waistband down. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I used my sewing machine's blind hem stitch and foot for the hem. It is one of my favorite tricks with sewing hems on dress pants, skirts, anything! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I wore my new pleated skirt with the <a href="http://kathrynkempler.blogspot.com/2017/12/pom-pom-sleeve-tee.html" target="_blank">pom pom sleeve tee</a> I made recently. I loved the white on white with a small pop of color. It is one of my favorite handmade outfits so far.</div>

When I was a senior, I took a road trip to Salt Lake City with some friends. Each trip to Salt Lake as incomplete without a stop at <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Decades-Vintage-Clothing/167569786587801" target="_blank">Decades</a>. My friends and I loved vintage clothing and always left that store with a treasure or two. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My goal for that shopping trip was to find a cool vintage dress to wear to prom. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I bought this pink dress hoping to alter it a bit and clean it for prom. Unfortunately, I wore a different dress to prom. This dress sat in the back of my closet for nine years! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lagE0tdx4CI/WptkgkCY2bI/AAAAAAAABPk/XZl8XsK9nYkbF9iBVSV9zyDt1BQbYLxzQCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_4003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lagE0tdx4CI/WptkgkCY2bI/AAAAAAAABPk/XZl8XsK9nYkbF9iBVSV9zyDt1BQbYLxzQCK4BGAYYCw/s400/IMG_4003.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">It's made of a crepe-y fabric and has an accordion pleated skirt and a surplice bodice with pleated darts, cap sleeves, and a lapel (tacked under in this image)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A few months ago, it caught my attention again and I decided I would give it another shot. Although beautiful as a dress, it was a little too formal. I loved the skirt of it, though, and wanted to be able to wear it and not look over the top. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wjji7JjMKRw/WptkiksDU4I/AAAAAAAABPs/WhQMFfkls_ovqMA9S8irYDMp2AzJdULqQCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_4004.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wjji7JjMKRw/WptkiksDU4I/AAAAAAAABPs/WhQMFfkls_ovqMA9S8irYDMp2AzJdULqQCK4BGAYYCw/s400/IMG_4004.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I simply cut the dress about a half inch above the waist line. I then attached 1-inch thick bias tape to the waist band, being careful to attach it in just the right place so that, when it would be folded over, it would have a clean finish. I then attached thick elastic the seam allowance so that the waist would hold its shape and size. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
At this point I tried it on and was disappointed with the amount of bulk the seam allowance was adding to the waistline. To fix it, I top stitched around the whole waist to keep the seam allowance down. And it fixed the problem! After that, All I had to do was reinforce the zipper and add a hook and eye. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ekUpRRRp2tQ/Wptk9pkjtyI/AAAAAAAABP0/9gTrw2SpRBkHUYrOlWI8nRPVa1S-4M_DgCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_4119.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ekUpRRRp2tQ/Wptk9pkjtyI/AAAAAAAABP0/9gTrw2SpRBkHUYrOlWI8nRPVa1S-4M_DgCK4BGAYYCw/s400/IMG_4119.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I wore this skirt to church with a simple white shirt and turquoise earrings. I felt like a million bucks! It is obvious that this is an old dress-turned-skirt. It has a few small stains (I have yet to get it cleaned.. its next on my list!) and the color is very unique.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It is a one-of-a-kind skirt! The kind that was worth the nine year wait. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I was so excited to use this fabric. It is the softest rayon challis fabric that I have never worked with before. I usually stick with solids (in purchased clothing and handmade clothing) so this pattern is a little funky for me, but I love the colors and I'm excited to have something different.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I was inspired by a handmade top I saw another seamstress wearing one night out. My sister in law suggested we get the same pattern and make it for ourselves, but my wheels were already turning thinking about what the pattern would look like! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The next day I drafted a pattern.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gtWYlONihHw/WpD1X9MVVpI/AAAAAAAABO4/1PxjNNXABkkvyq0w3ne8KjWzusb5pkYEQCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/Screen%2BShot%2B2018-02-23%2Bat%2B10.16.43%2BPM.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gtWYlONihHw/WpD1X9MVVpI/AAAAAAAABO4/1PxjNNXABkkvyq0w3ne8KjWzusb5pkYEQCK4BGAYYCw/s320/Screen%2BShot%2B2018-02-23%2Bat%2B10.16.43%2BPM.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My pattern resulted in a bodice that was way too short. I had to improvise and add a strip at the bottom for length. Luckily, it is hardly noticeable with the business of the print. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The hem, sleeves, and neckline all have wide facings.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If I remake this top, which I certainly will, I would add more fullness to the sleeves and add an inch or two in length to the bodice. I would probably shorten the sleeves by one or two inches as well.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Other than that, I'm so happy with the outcome! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NQ2nL6mJetc/WpDxV0C0c1I/AAAAAAAABOk/o5k0cMlsBDoTA0BwZ14voriYRMah9w72wCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/Kaddy_04.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NQ2nL6mJetc/WpDxV0C0c1I/AAAAAAAABOk/o5k0cMlsBDoTA0BwZ14voriYRMah9w72wCK4BGAYYCw/s640/Kaddy_04.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

So my sister's birthday was in August.<br />
A few weeks late, I gave her a handmade apron as a gift! Now, months later, I finally have a few pictures of her sporting it. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
She, her husband, and their two boys recently moved into a new house that has a bunch of land and fruit trees and their kitchen just got remodeled. Her cooking skills are gourmet-status and her sourdough knowledge would blow anyone out of the water. More on her homestead <a href="https://www.instagram.com/framehomestead/" target="_blank">here</a>. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
I found <a href="http://www.simplicity.com/simplicity-pattern-8230-misses-dottie-angel-reversible-apron-dress-and-tabard/S8230.html#q=8230&start=1" target="_blank">this pattern</a> for sale recently and I knew it would be the perfect gift for her.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3PKo3ktZBFY/WgksPfKMo3I/AAAAAAAABCg/wAbRRAbtfJUjr50HgFmCqck1TDEXBJEGgCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_0196.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3PKo3ktZBFY/WgksPfKMo3I/AAAAAAAABCg/wAbRRAbtfJUjr50HgFmCqck1TDEXBJEGgCK4BGAYYCw/s400/IMG_0196.jpeg" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption">This image on the pattern caught my eye. So pretty!</td></tr>

A beautiful, handmade linen apron that has deep pockets, that front-tie detail, and a practical, flattering silhouette seems like the perfect gift for the hardest working homemaker.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">It called for french seams! My favorite! </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I loved the amount of bias tape used in this project. It is so easy to work with and it has such a clean finish. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Once I had the entire apron assembled and hemmed, I couldn't find the pattern piece for the tie at the waist. I had to improvise by cutting out the pieces for the tie without the pattern piece. I used my bias tape maker that I have never used before.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gkS5RhPoYc8/WgkpJnkWafI/AAAAAAAABCU/BW-3fGiu8Xsu-bhS-4MppnuMc3URplrHQCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_0195.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gkS5RhPoYc8/WgkpJnkWafI/AAAAAAAABCU/BW-3fGiu8Xsu-bhS-4MppnuMc3URplrHQCK4BGAYYCw/s320/IMG_0195.jpg" width="240" /></a><br />
<br />
It worked great! I was easily able to turn the double-fold bias tape into the waist tie and attach it to the apron.<br />
After the apron was finished, I found the pattern piece that I was missing. Oh well!<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The apron tied in the back</td></tr>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The apron tied in the front </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I wish I had enough of the lighter fabric to make the whole apron out of it, or perhaps a lighter apron with dark pockets. The lighter fabric is so beautiful and much softer than the darker. Overall, I am happy with how it turned out</div>

I have been so in love with the awesome detail of this tee lately:<br />

<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0I8JMj5cr74/WgjhI2uoqLI/AAAAAAAABBg/khFtgjhTH-ESIj4XXbCRTwSd5Vp2p5V_gCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/Screen%2BShot%2B2017-11-12%2Bat%2B4.00.50%2BPM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0I8JMj5cr74/WgjhI2uoqLI/AAAAAAAABBg/khFtgjhTH-ESIj4XXbCRTwSd5Vp2p5V_gCK4BGAYYCw/s400/Screen%2BShot%2B2017-11-12%2Bat%2B4.00.50%2BPM.png" width="396" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.anthropologie.com/en-gb/shop/pommed-t-shirt-neutral" target="_blank">Source</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The clothing pieces I gravitate towards are usually solid colored and simple, yet have a unique element in the detail or silhouette. This top is a perfect example of that. Its a simple, ivory knit t-shirt with a slightly flared sleeve and multi-colored pom pom trim. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When I realized I might be a few months too late in noticing this top, I started to keep an eye out for the perfect pom pom trim to create my own. I found that most of the options out there are small, solid color, and cheaply made. I checked Amazon, Joann Fabrics, Hobby Lobby, and couldn't find anything that I would use for this remake. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
One day as I was searching the internet, it dawned on me to check Etsy. The first trim to catch my eye was this:<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/286189561/cotton-mutli-colored-pom-pom-trim-pompom?ref=hp_rv" target="_blank">Source</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Have you ever seen a more perfect match in your entire life?! I couldn't believe I had found an identical pom pom trim to use in my remake. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So I bought myself a yard! I only wish I had bought 10+ yards for various projects like adding trim on kitchen towels. </div>

My sister in law <a href="https://littlefishapparel.com/" target="_blank">Rachel</a> brought me to a sewing night with her sewing blogger friends. Once a months a few local bloggers get together to chat about projects and patterns, eat treats, and do some project prep. While there, I made the pattern for this much anticipated top. The next morning, I cut out the fabric.<br />
I started with assembling the sleeves because I was so excited about the pom poms.<br />

When I went to assemble the bodice, I noticed I made a huge, stupid mistake: I cut out two bodice back pieces and no front piece and didn't have enough fabric to re-cut the bodice front.<br />
I did my best to reshape the extra back piece to closely resemble the front piece. However, the shape was not exactly as I planned and will result in a looser fit.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-x0-K5F2-Tpg/WjSnnni7dLI/AAAAAAAABJo/IYKY5VnGZMkTEki3Gy9zmWsm14qbTe1fwCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_3722.jpeg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-x0-K5F2-Tpg/WjSnnni7dLI/AAAAAAAABJo/IYKY5VnGZMkTEki3Gy9zmWsm14qbTe1fwCK4BGAYYCw/s640/IMG_3722.jpeg" width="480" /></a><br />
<br />
Once I attached the neckband, I wore the mostly finished project to a graduation party. I was too excited to wait until it was finished. The shape of the top turned out better than I expected. It was not as loose as I thought it would be. The heavy weight of the fabric helps, though. It has such beautiful drape that a loser fit still looks really nice.<br />
Also, after 3 years of being apart, my dress form and I are finally reunited! Together, we are unstoppable.<br />
<br />
After the party, I came home and finished the hem and topstitching.<br />

<br />
Usually as I make something, I hit a point where my excitement plummets and I don't love the end result nearly as much as I had hoped. Well, that was not the case with this one! It might be my favorite top I've ever made. I've worn it twice now and I've received a few compliments already.<br />
I will most definitely be wearing it every day for a while. </div>

Today I'm really missing the Fabric District. Until very recently, I lived very close to Los Angeles and it was easy to make a trip down, even though that rarely happened. Now that I am far away, I realize that I took it for granted. I should have gone monthly! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The week before Thanksgiving I went with my mother- and sister-in-law. They were in search of faux leather and suede, some cushioning, and denim, and I was in search of chiffon, rayon, and all things white. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
First things first, we stopped for a bacon wrapped hotdog on the street (the best!), then on to browse.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The first stop we made (as always) was Michael Levine Loft. Its our favorite place!! You just have to dig through bins of fabric to find something you like. Often you'll find pieces that are cut up or even stained, but you're bound to find a large amount of something amazing if you put in the time. </div>
<div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Sorting through some awesome finds at Michael Levine Loft. Can you spot Peter??</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After leaving Michael Levine Loft with bags full of fabric, we dropped the bags off at the car and kept on going!<br />
After a quick stop-in at Michael Levine across the street, we went to some of our other favorite shops down the street, Trim 2000, JB Textiles, and Angel Textiles.<br />
There are some shops that specialize in certain fabrics, such as knits, swimsuit material, or lace. Often, we know just where to go to get what we are looking for, but it is also fun to just walk through new shops to compare price and quality.</div>
</div>
<div>
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The fabric I bought that day, excluding one piece of white knit cotton that has already been made into a top</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have plans for most of what I got that day.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The bottom piece is a super soft white silky fabric that I might make into a blouse or use as lining. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The ribbed white will be a full, pleated skirt.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The maroon chiffon (9 yards!) will be a floor length circle skirt! Most excited about that skirt. I'm hoping to have it made by Christmas.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The blue paisley crepe fabric will be a sundress.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The pink and blue rayon will be a pretty dress with pretty sleeve details to show off the amazing drape. The exact silhouette to be determined. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Everything except the chiffon was from Michael Levine Loft. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Cant wait to get it all made!</div>

My favorite skirt has been my favorite since 2012 when I made it. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It is a simple circle skirt made from a heavy textured fabric I found at a thrift store during my college days. It is the perfect weight for a flowy circle skirt and has the most beautiful drape. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zm4IIGXMS3I/WhspsWDc0xI/AAAAAAAABFI/V0moJ1IUNJcmhqFIt22-AL3D7whjH6A4gCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_6436.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zm4IIGXMS3I/WhspsWDc0xI/AAAAAAAABFI/V0moJ1IUNJcmhqFIt22-AL3D7whjH6A4gCK4BGAYYCw/s640/IMG_6436.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The pattern for a circle skirt is so simple. A true circle skirt would not have any seams or closures and would probably have an elastic waist. I made mine with a waistband and an invisible zipper at center back. It has side seams and a center back seam.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I took my waist measurement and used one fourth of that measurement as the width on the back and front pattern pieces. The skirt front piece was cut on the fold and the center back had some extra seam allowance for a center back seam. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I wear this skirt on a regular basis and have yet to find a skirt I love more, store-bought or handmade. I do, however, need to replace the zipper sometime soon. When I do that, I will also let the waist out a little bit. It was always a tad bit too tight..</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OuWEbyzMRtI/WhsprTXrELI/AAAAAAAABFA/sNwlikU8FdcaYVYTaPCzVmZwN76iBarRQCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_6435.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OuWEbyzMRtI/WhsprTXrELI/AAAAAAAABFA/sNwlikU8FdcaYVYTaPCzVmZwN76iBarRQCK4BGAYYCw/s640/IMG_6435.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
When I hold the skirt out, it shows how full it really is. I love the fullness!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My parents' yard was the perfect dreamland to take a few pictures after church. My husband was so sweet to take these pictures for me. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Also, I had to get a few twirling shots to demonstrate the beauty of this skirt.</div>
